Tight Shark Hold’em Advisor

Here are some screen shots of the Advisor with a typical online poker table.

hole

The screen shot above shows the Tight Shark Hold’em Advisor on the right with a typical online poker room on the left. The player, Angelo, is in middle position. Angelo enters his cards into the Advisor. He has a Qc and Jd in the hole. The Advisor suggests that Angelo call.

Let's see what happens on the flop.

advisor in use

The flop shows 9d, Td and Qd. The Advisor tells Angelo many things to help him make a solid decision at this point in the hand.

  1. He currently has a pair of Queens and a possible flush.
  2. His odds of getting three of a kind on the next card are 4% (25:1).
  3. His odds of getting a straight on the next card are 17% (6:1).
  4. His odds of getting a flush on the next card are 19% (5:1).
  5. His odds of getting a straight flush on the next card are 4% (25:1).
  6. An opponent may already have 3 of kind, a straight, or a flush but a full house or better is not possible at this point in the hand for any of Angelo's opponents.
  7. Spoken audio messages play to ensure that Angelo is aware of the possible hands his opponents may have.
  8. The Advisor shows a reminder to consider the size of the pot versus the odds of making a hand. Linking the size of the pot to the odds of making a hand is solid poker playing. If the player follows this type of advice consistently, he will win more money in the long run because the size of the pot when he wins will be large enough to compensate for the times he loses. The pot is more than 5 times the bet, so it makes sense to call.
  9. The Advisor suggests that Angelo should bet if the pot is unraised and call if the pot is raised. Jenn bets. Angelo calls. Bongo raises. Jenn calls. Angelo calls again.

Let's see what happens on the next card.

table a

The turn card is a Qs. Angelo now has three Queens. Usually that is a great hand and many players might react with haste and overplay the hand. The Advisor helps Angelo to stay focused and consider all the possibilities.

  1. The Advisor shows Angelo that one of his opponents might still have a better hand such as a straight, flush, or full house.
  2. The Advisor reminds Angelo to observe how his opponents are betting.
  3. The Advisor shows Angelo the odds of getting a straight (6:1), a flush (5:1), a full house (5:1), 4 of a kind (50:1), and a straight flush (25:1). Any diamond (of which 9 remain) will give him a flush. Nine different cards (3 nines, 3 tens, and 3 jacks) will give him a full house. The fourth Queen will give him 4 of a kind. Two of the remaining diamonds will give him a straight flush. This hand looks very promising.
  4. The Advisor suggests that Angelo should bet if the pot is unraised and call if the pot is raised. Jenn bets. Angelo calls. Bongo raises. Jenn calls. Angelo calls again.

Let's see what happens on the next card.

table b

The river card is a 9s. Angelo has a full house with Queens over nines. This is a strong hand.

  1. The Advisor asks the focusing question "Could an opponent have a better full house?" Angelo gives it a moment's thought and concludes that the only full house that will beat his is Queens over Tens.
  2. The Advisor shows that an opponent may have 4 of a kind but that would be rare.
  3. The Advisor shows that an opponent likely has a full house or possibly a flush.
  4. The Advisor suggests that Angelo should raise and reraise.

Who won? In the actual hand, Jenn had Ad Kh (she was hoping for a flush or straight). Bongo had a pocket pair of tens and bet aggressively because he thought he had a winning full house. Jenn checked after she saw the river card and then folded after Angelo bet and Bongo raised. Angelo reraised. Bongo called. Angelo won the pot.
